Publishing Guidelines for the TFLA Journal
The Texas Foreign Language Journal is published three times a year (Spring, Summer and Fall) and contains two types of articles: (1) newsworthy language-related items about teachers, schools and programs and (2) scholarly articles. The general news items are editor-reviewed while the scholarly articles are peer-reviewed.
I. Newsworthy Language-related Articles
The TFLA Journal includes information about conference events, scholarships, awards, and general matters of professional interest. The TFLA Journal also includes articles that focus on teaching techniques and materials; technological innovations; and community, state and national educational developments.
Submissions to the TFLA Journal are encouraged. The Journal would especially like to report the achievements, honors and awards of Texas LOTE teachers and students. We urge members to send us this information, including photos when possible.
Members are also invited to submit articles to the TFLA Journal on any subject of interest to Texas teachers of languages other than English. Examples include teaching methods, cultural topics, study abroad, ways to advance the success of language classes or programs, materials on the promotion and advocacy of language study, and theoretical language topics. Both documented research reports and book reviews and less formal, practical pieces of the "teaching tip" variety are accepted. In general, articles should be addressed to the classroom teacher from elementary through college level, or administrators in the area of LOTE.
General announcements are welcomed and will be printed if space permits and if, in the judgment of the editor, they contain professional information of likely interest to the readers. The announcements are subject to shortening. Job announcements are not printed in the TFLA Journal. An announcement may be rejected if it is deemed overtly commercial, in which case, a paid advertisement may be more appropriate.
Articles should be submitted by email to the editor. A maximum length of five typed pages is preferred. Authors must be honest about authorship and properly document any sources used in order to avoid plagiarism or breach of copyright. Footnotes or parenthetical documentation may be used. No specific style guide is required, but documentation must be in consistent form.
II. Peer-reviewed, Scholarly Articles
Members are encouraged to submit via email theoretical and research-oriented manuscripts, which will be reviewed by a committee of peers. Single-spaced manuscripts should not exceed 15 pages in length. APA formatting is required.
III. Additional Guidelines
For all submissions, preference is given to Texas authors. In most cases, authors of articles should be members of the Texas Foreign Language Association.
Articles may be emailed to the editor at any time during the year. Articles for the spring issue should be sent by December 1, for the summer issue by May 1, and for the fall issue by August 1.
The editor will correspond with the author regarding acceptance of each article and work with the author on shortening or revising the article. The author may be asked to proofread the article before it is printed.
No payment will be issued, but the author, upon request, will receive additional copies of the issue in which the article appears.
The editor of the TFA Journal makes the decisions concerning acceptance of newsworthy manuscripts, and a peer review committee makes the decisions concerning acceptance of the research articles. The editor works with the TFLA Executive Board in setting the editorial policy.
